The console that revolutionised the world of video games

In the world of video games, few devices have left as lasting an impression as the Nintendo Entertainment System, better known as the Nintendo NES. Launched by Nintendo in 1985, this 8-bit console became one of the most beloved icons for millions of gamers worldwide and laid the foundations for the future of the video game industry. In this article, we explore the history of the NES, its impact on the market and some of its most iconic games.

At the roots of the myth

The Nintendo NES is one of the most famous consoles in history, a machine that marked a turning point for the games industry. Manufactured by Nintendo of Japan, the NES was launched in Japan in 1983 under the name Famicom, an acronym for ‘family computer’. Originally designed as a low-cost alternative to expensive arcade consoles, the NES arrived in the United States in 1985 and was an incredible success, selling over 60 million units worldwide.

The console’s compact design, simple but effective controller and ability to play games with 8-bit graphics were revolutionary at the time. This allowed it to break into a market dominated by underperforming consoles, reviving an industry in crisis.

The impact of the NES on the video game industry

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the collapse of the video game market. After the great arcade boom and the introduction of several consoles, the industry had slowed down considerably, mainly due to an oversaturation of the market and the quality of the games not always living up to expectations. The NES was the answer to this crisis, bringing games back into the homes of millions.

The console raised the standard of game quality with well-designed titles, leading to the concept of ‘premium games’ – titles designed and developed to deliver memorable gaming experiences. The NES also introduced a new cartridge-based distribution model that allowed for a greater variety of games without the need to change hardware or have games pre-installed.

The Nintendo NES managed to combine attractive design and solid hardware architecture with games that defined entire genres. This paved the way for Nintendo’s future success as it cemented its position as a leader in the video game industry, making innovation and quality its hallmark.

Iconic NES games

One of the things that made the Nintendo NES so legendary was its incredible library of games. Some of these titles have become iconic and have left an indelible mark on the history of video games. Here are some of the console’s most famous games:

Super Mario Bros, released in 1985, is undoubtedly the most famous NES game. It introduced Mario and Luigi to the general public and revolutionised the platform genre. With its innovative gameplay, thoughtful level design and unforgettable soundtrack, Super Mario Bros. helped redefine what a hit game was. So popular was the game that it spawned a veritable saga that continues today with titles such as Super Mario Odyssey.

The Legend of Zelda is another NES masterpiece, a role-playing and adventure game that marked a milestone in the open-world genre. Released in 1986, Zelda introduced a vast explorable world, complex puzzles and the ability to upgrade the skills of the protagonist, Link. The game laid the foundation for one of the most popular and long-running series in video game history.

Released in 1986, Metroid is another title that had a huge impact on gaming. Combining exploration, action and an intriguing storyline, Metroid gave birth to one of the most iconic protagonists: Samus Aran. The game has had a lasting impact on gaming culture, heavily influencing the ‘Metroidvania’ genre, which combines non-linear exploration and combat.

Released in 1986, Castlevania introduced players to a gothic world populated by vampires and monsters. Its challenging gameplay, dark graphics and epic soundtrack made it one of Nintendo’s most popular games and one of its most important franchises to this day.

Mega Man (1987) became an icon of the NES thanks to its innovative gameplay and difficulty that tested players’ skills. The series introduced a unique formula: Mega Man, the protagonist, could acquire new powers after defeating his enemies, an idea that revolutionised platform gameplay.

What remains of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The NES may be a console of the past, but its spirit lives on. Classic NES games have been revived on various modern platforms, thanks to services like Nintendo Switch Online, which allows users to relive the titles that defined an era. The NES has also inspired numerous remakes and modern versions of its games, including the recent Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Collection.

Nintendo has also continued to dominate the market with successes such as the Nintendo Switch, which has continued to innovate and win over new generations of gamers. Characters created on the NES, such as Mario, Link and Samus, are still icons of popular culture today.

The Nintendo NES is not just a console, it is a cultural institution. It represented a period of innovation, overcoming challenges and successes that shaped the video game industry as we know it today. With a library of games that remains unrivalled and an influence that is still felt in modern consoles, the NES marked a golden era for the gaming world. Whether you’re a retro gaming enthusiast or just curious about the history of video games, the Nintendo NES is undoubtedly an important part of that history.
